Thermal Prestressing

Thermal induced prestressing for Distortion Minimazation (SFB-570 B8)

A final heat treatment of steel devices can lead to distortions. The distortion-potentials which have been insert into the devices during previous process steps are activated during this heat treatment. To reduce the negative influence on the devices by the distortions a new process step is developed. The aim of this project is to minimize the charge-typical and individual distortions by local pre-stressing using laser radiation before the final heat treatment is carried out. This project is focused on the manipulation of residual stresses to minimize the distortions. On the basis of a test specimen (ideal gear wheel teeth) it was possible to develop the new processes-step “thermal pre-stressing”. In the present running time the new process is applied on gear wheels.

Caused by the high complexity of the necessary manipulation of the residual stress field a simulation of the whole process is and was required.

Therefore, the simulation is extended from the test specimen (images 1) to a gear wheel (image 2). Furthermore, experiments are realized to validate the simulation and disclose first knowledge about manipulation of the residual stress field.
