Comprehension and Reduction of Distortion in Deep Penetration Laser Welding in the Micro Range (VO 530/35-1)

Although the effects associated with distortion are quite well understood in the macro range, these findings cannot be transferred offhand to the micro range, as especially in scaling of complex parts significant size effects are to be expected. Thus, aim of this project is to develop a profound comprehension of the basic phenomena underlying welding distortion in deep penetration laser welding in the micro range as well as to derive appropriate strategies for its minimisation. To this end, on the basis of experimental results and a modelling of all relevant aspects of distortion in the micro range, scaling laws shall be identified to elucidate similarities and differences to the macro range. As a result, proven techniques from the macro range shall be reassessed with respect to their applicability in the micro range and be developed further in the long run. This is a prerequisite for a minimisation of distortion by optimising clamping or pre-stressing techniques and welding parameters also for more complex parts.
