Melt Pool Dynamics

Influence of melt pool dynamics and process stability in high brightness laser beam welding (Wa 1602/1-1)

In laser welding, humping is a limiting factor for increasing welding speed. This phenomenon is given by a 3-dimensional flow field inside the melt pool and arises at higher welding speed, depending on the geometrical behaviors of the melt pool. Humping can be observed particularly at materials with a higher melting point. The goal of the investigation is the development of suitable modeling and simulation methods; as well as welding experiments with high brightness laser for a better understanding of the humping phenomenon. The particular focus is concentrated on observation and characterization of fluid flow relations in the melt pool dynamics.
