Melt Geometry Dependent Distortion

Modeling of Weld Pool Flow and of Workpiece Distortion during Laser Beam Welding (FNK)

In the framework of this project, a simulation model of the laser beam welding process will be developed. The model couples the fluid dynamics calculation of weld pool flow with a global simulation of stress development and workpiece deformation. With this model, a number of factors which affect welding results can be accounted for. Eventually, the influence of the weld pool geometry on the workpiece distortion can be examined. The thermo-mechanical simulation model employed in this project is based on that created by the group of Ph.D. students in the project “self-optimized thermo-mechanical simulation”, which can automatically determine optimal welding parameters with the provision of predefined quality criteria.
