Fast Nonometer Patter Generation by a New Hybrid Cutting Process for Generating Discontinuous Diffractive Optics (I/81 260)

The goal of the project is the development of a new production process for diffractive optical elements based on ultraprecision diamond turning. The project is a collaboration with the Laboratory for Precision Machining (LFM) in Bremen and is sponsored by the Volkswagen Foundation. The basic idea behind the project is to use a piezo actuator with a stroke in the range of a few hundred nanometers to modulate the cutting depth of an ultraprecision diamond turning process. The properties of the fabrication process pose new challenges for the design of the element. Especially the spiral structure of the workpiece surface and the influence of the diamond structure on the diffracted light have to be considered. Figure 1 shows a fabricated surface and the intensity, which results from its illumination with coherent light.
